Ou Chen is an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Brown University. He received his BS degree in Chemical Physics from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2004, and completed his PhD study in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Florida. He was working with Prof. MoungiBawendi as postdoctoral associate at MIT before joining Brown University in 2015. Prof. Ou Chen has so far published more than 50 publicationsin high-impact journals(total citation of ~4200 and H-index of 29), includingNature, Science, Nature Materials, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Chemistry, Nature Communications, Nature Biomedical Engineering, etc. He has been named as Emerging Investigator by Royal Society of Chemistry and Rising Star by Frontier of Chemistry. He is currently appointed as a Young Star Editor ofNano Researchjournal. His current research interests focus on exploring novel methodologies for fabrications of functional nanocrystals, semiconductor quantum dots, perovskite nanomaterialsand their self-assembled superstructures for energy, catalysis and bio-related applications.

High-quality nanomaterials: from single quantum dot to their higher-order architectural superstructures

Nanocrystal materials are emerging as an important class of tools that are revolutionizing both fundamental science and technological applications due to their many unique properties. In particular, quantum dots nanocrystals have demonstrated their great potential to be applied in a wide variety of applications as a unique emissive material. In my talk, I will first describe my experimental effort for the synthesis and characterization of a variety of quantum dots nanocrystals from homogenous materials to heterogeneous structures. These dots combine, in one material, all the best performance metrics desired in quantum dot nanomaterials. In the second part of my talk, I will show how we can use colloidal nanocrystals as building blocks to generate higher-order architectures in assemblies. Several examples will be discussed from simple isotropic systems to complex anisotropic multifunctional materials. Their potential applications for biological and energy applications will be discussed.
