    School of Humanities and Arts successfully held English speech contest

    (Correspondent: Liu Xinhui & Liu Lechen) In order to further strengthen the School's cultural construction, cultivate international vision, and improve students' ability of independent thinking and language expression, on the afternoon of November 8, the School of Humanities and Arts successfully held an English speech contest in Room 106, Zone II, Xinyuan Building.

    At the beginning of the competition, the host Lyu Kunning introduced the background and significance of the event and warmly welcomed the judges. Then she read out the specific rules and procedures of the contest. The contest was divided into two rounds. In the first round, the contestants were required to give a three minute speech on one of the three topics. After the speech, the scores of all contestants were counted. The first thirty percent of the actual number of participants would be selected according to the scores to enter the second round. In the second round, the judges would ask questions to the contestants, and the contestants would randomly choose topics to give impromptu speeches.

    As the competition began, the contestants would give a speech on stage in the order of drawing lots. After full preparation, the students gave a speech full of emotion, and talked about the situation in fluent English. They showed their advantages and specialties, styles and characteristics incisively and vividly, and showed their charm and confidence, which was fully recognized by the judges. After the wonderful show in the first round, the judges would score for each contestant according to their specific performance, and the 12 students with the highest score would successfully enter the second round.

    In the second round, the main test was the contestants' adaptability to improvise on the spot. The 12 contestants who had been promoted to the next round chose topics in turn and made their answers in English in a short time. The students' quick and fluent answers won unanimous praise of the judges. With the contestants' eloquent speeches, the competition was coming to an end. After two rounds of fierce competition, the first, second and third prizes, the best oral English prize, and the best performance award would be finally selected, and the judges and teachers would respectively present certificates and prizes to the winners. In the warm applause of the students, the contest came to a successful conclusion.

    The success of this English speech contest not only provided a stage for students to play their talents, but also fully demonstrated the spirit of youth and vitality of students from School of Humanities and Arts as well as their practical learning style. It was of far-reaching significance to create a strong English learning atmosphere, mobilize the enthusiasm of college students to learn English, enrich campus cultural life and strengthen the cultural construction of the School.
