Vice President Zhang Jincheng led a delegation from Xidian University to visit renowned universities in Hong Kong and Macau from May 29th to June 2nd, 2023. The aim of this trip was to deepen cooperation and exchange with these universities, as well as to consolidate joint student education, talent cultivation, and scientific research. In light of the opportunities and challenges presented by international exchanges in the post-epidemic era, this visit was also intended to assist in the construction of first-class disciplines of Xidian University.
Officials from the Graduate School, Guangzhou Research Institute, School of Cybersecurity and Network Security, and Office of Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan Affairs also joined the delegation.
During the visit to the City University of Hong Kong on May 29th, the delegation met with Dean of the Graduate School Li Guoyao, Dean of the School of Engineering Professor Zhi Chunyi, and Director of the Office of Global Affairs Dai Lin. The two sides had fruitful discussions about promoting exchanges between students, joint education programs, and innovation and entrepreneurship education. They reached an agreement to sign relevant cooperation agreements. Established in 1994, the City University of Hong Kong is an international public research university that ranked 54th in the QS World University Rankings in 2023.
The following day, the delegation visited the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and met with Vice President Zhao Ruheng, Vice President Chen Zhenghao, and other officials. During the meeting, Zhang Jincheng introduced the current situation and recent developments of our university's disciplines. The two sides reached an intention to cooperate in undergraduate student exchange projects, joint PhD degree programs, and discussed scholar cooperation in the field of electronic information, as well as industrial-academic-research cooperation with Guangzhou Research Institute. Established in 1937, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University is one of the oldest universities in Hong Kong. It has excellent teaching and research capabilities and has become a world-renowned top university.
On May 31st, the delegation visited the Chinese University of Hong Kong for research talks. The host delegation included Zeng Hanqi, Deputy Dean of the School of Engineering, Xu Jianbin, Assistant Dean, and officials responsible for Mainland China and Greater China Development Department. During the talks, the two sides discussed the coordinated development of computer science, AI, and biomedical engineering in-depth. They agreed to collaborate with the Guangzhou Research Institute on academic exchanges and joint scientific research. The Chinese University of Hong Kong is one of the leading universities in Asia and has a high academic reputation in computer science, medicine, biology, and biochemistry.
In the afternoon of the same day, Zhang Jincheng and his delegation went to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to exchange views with Wang Yang, Vice President, Tong Peng'er, Associate Vice President, the representatives of professors of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, and officials from the Global Affairs and Greater China Office. Zhang Jincheng shared the development achievements of Xidian University and expressed that we attach great importance to and actively promote in-depth cooperation with world-class universities. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is an internationally renowned university, and we hope that this exchange visit will promote deep cooperation between the two universities in talent cultivation and academic exchanges. The two sides conducted in-depth discussions on joint PhD programs, scientific research cooperation, and signed an agreement to deepen cooperation in various fields with the Guangzhou Research Institute.
On June 1st, the delegation visited the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macau Special Administrative Region (hereinafter referred to as the Liaison Office). Shi Shuzheng, Deputy Director of the Youth Education Department of the Liaison Office, Yan Zhigang, Deputy Director of the Office, and Li Yongxian, Director of the University Department of the Youth Education Department participated in the talks. Shi Shuzheng affirmed our university's major achievements in electronic information and hoped that Xidian University could deepen cooperation with Macau universities for complementary advantages and contribute to the development of Macau, the Greater Bay Area, and the country. The Liaison Office is an important bridge for promoting exchanges and cooperation between Macau and mainland China in the fields of economy, education, science, culture, sports, etc.
On June 2nd, the delegation visited the University of Macau for an exchange and toured the National Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI. During the visit, Vice President Ma Xuyuan of the University of Macau and Director Mai Peiran of the National Key Laboratory introduced the university and laboratory. The two sides held extensive discussions on teacher and scientific research cooperation, joint PhD programs, and international summer schools. They agreed to carry out comprehensive cooperation at the university and laboratory levels.
In the afternoon of the same day, the delegation visited the Macau University of Science and Technology. Vice President of the university Pang Chuan, Head of the Innovation Engineering College, and representatives of professors attended the meeting. Pang Chuan stated that the two universities have established a close cooperation relationship and signed a university-level cooperation agreement. The Innovation Engineering College of Macau University of Science and Technology signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Guangzhou Research Institute of Xidian University, with academic forums and scholar exchanges already underway. By focusing on "what the country needs and what Macau excels in," Macau University of Science and Technology is fully promoting comprehensive cooperation between the two universities in talent cultivation, scientific research, achievement transformation, and high-level personnel introduction. Zhang Jincheng introduced the development achievements of our university and expressed his expectation of expanding more areas of cooperation between the two universities in the future. He looks forward to fully leveraging the regional advantages of the Guangzhou Research Institute and deepening comprehensive cooperation with the Innovation Engineering College of Macau University of Science and Technology. After the meeting, the delegation visited the State Key Laboratory for Lunar and Planetary Sciences and the State Key Laboratory for Quality Research of Chinese Medicine at Macau University of Science and Technology. This was the first mutual visit after the signing of the agreement between the two universities.
During their exchange visit to Hong Kong and Macau, the delegation also had conversations with talented young scholars who are expected to be introduced by our university. Zhang Jincheng gave a detailed presentation of the current status and future of Xidian University, talent introduction policies, and more. He welcomed young talents studying and working in Hong Kong and Macau to join Xidian University and contribute to the construction and development of a world-class university with first-class disciplines.
Carrying out high-level cooperative exchanges with universities in Hong Kong and Macau is an important measure for our university to implement the requirements of opening up to the world in the new era, to help the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and to promote international support for the construction of "Double First-Class" universities. This visit has further deepened mutual understanding between universities in Hong Kong and Macau and promoted the full integration of the Guangzhou Research Institute into the Greater Bay Area. In the later stage, we will implement the intended cooperation reached with these universities. We aim to deepen and expand comprehensive cooperation with universities in Hong Kong and Macau in talent cultivation, joint scientific research, industry-university-research cooperation, achievement transformation, and beyond.
