Recently, the results of the 2020 Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling were announced. Xidian students won 1 INFORMS Award and 7 Finalists. This was the fourth time that Xidian won the Outstanding Award in this contest after winning the award in 2014, 2015 and 2018, and the first time to win the INFORMS Award.

Mathematical modeling is a bridge connecting mathematics and practical problems, and is the main way to transform mathematics science and technology. It has become one of the most important abilities of modern science and technology workers. Mathematical modeling practice has changed the traditional teaching model, and has become an important aspect of teaching reform in colleges and universities. Through the practice of mathematical modeling, students learned the whole process of using mathematical theory and method to analyze and solve problems, and gradually formed the consciousness of using mathematical modeling to solve practical problems. An average of over 3,600 students and teachersin Xidian participate in competitions related with mathematical modeling each year, and the number of students participating in mathematical modeling education and practice amounted to 330,000.

Wenhao Yang, a member of the INFORMS Award winner, said “the team of three of us was formed in our freshman year. We learned a lot of knowledge about mathematics modeling in the winter vacation. Then we went through many trainings and competitions together, such asschool competition, national competition trainingand national competition, and finally participated in this competition. Trainings and competitions improved our team’s cooperation and modeling ability”.
The 2020 Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling encountered the COVID-19 epidemic, so our school timely adjusted training plans and competition schedule, and turned to carrying out trainings and competitions online based on various online platforms.
